Our Firm

The "Telleen Law Firm" had its origin in 1934 following the graduation of Kenneth L. Telleen from law school and his admittance to the Illinois Bar Association. Kenneth commenced the general practice of law in Cambridge immediately thereafter. On October 10, 1935, Leonard W. Telleen joined his brother in the Cambridge Law Firm after graduating from the University of Illinois Law School that same year. Kenneth and Leonard Telleen were law partners for fifty-nine (59) years with Kenneth retiring in early 1994. Leonard Telleen died on August 8, 1994 in his 59th year of law practice. The Telleen brothers followed their father, the late Judge Leonard E. Telleen, in the practice of law and community service.

In 1969, the law firm of Telleen & Telleen grew when Attorney James T. Braendle joined the firm on February 17, 1969. On January 1, 1970, the firm became Telleen, Telleen & Braendle. Braendle came to Cambridge from Geneva where he was an attorney with Chicago Title Insurance Company following his graduation from the John Marshall Law School in Chicago in 1966. His pre-law education was at Valparaiso University and Northwestern University.

Kurt J. Horberg, also of Cambridge and son of Circuit Judge Robert J. Horberg, joined the law firm in 1977 following graduation from the John Marshall Law School. Horberg was an honors graduate from both Augustana College (1974) and the John Marshall Law School (1977). On January 1, 1978, the law firm name changed to Telleen, Telleen, Braendle & Horberg, with Horberg becoming the fourth partner.

On May 16, 1994, Scott M. Smith joined the law firm. Smith, an attorney as well as Certified Public Accountant, was a high honors graduate of the University of Illinois and the Northern Illinois University College of Law. The name of the law firm changed to Telleen, Braendle, Horberg & Smith on January 1, 1995 with Smith's admittance to the firm as a partner. The law firm currently operates as a Professional Corporation (PC) under the current firm name of Telleen, Horberg, Smith & Carmen, P.C.

Bruce L. Carmen joined the firm in 2001 following two years of solo practice. Carmen completed his undergraduate degree (A.B., with honors) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He received his law degree, cum laude, from the University of Illinois College of Law in 1984. He was admitted to the bar in Illinois in 1984 and U. S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois in 1986. Carmen practiced with the national law firm of Hinshaw & Culbertson from 1986-1999, and was elected a partner in 1993. He is also admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the Fifth, Seventh and Eighth Circuit Courts of Appeals and the U.S. District Court, Central District of Illinois.
